Two Mi-8MTV-5M military transport helicopters have been officially incorporated into the Northern Fleet’s mixed aviation corps, strengthening the region’s capabilities in mobility, rescue and troop support.
The aircraft completed a transfer flight from the Republic of Tatarstan, covering more than 2,500 kilometers to their final destination. The route included strategic refueling stops in the regions of Ivanovo, Arkhangelsk and Murmansk.

According to the commander of one of the helicopters, Daniil, the aircraft’s performance exceeded expectations during the redeployment. “During the transfer from the helicopter factory, the aircraft performed excellently. The new autopilot system greatly simplifies piloting, even at night. Thanks to the powerful engines, startup has become easier. It is possible to heat the cabin and equipment immediately, without starting the engines. This is especially important for us in the north,” he noted.

Designed for troop and cargo transport, search-and-rescue missions and fire support in day and night operations, the Mi-8MTV-5M comes equipped with a passive jamming system that significantly increases its protection against missile attacks.
The new helicopters, produced by Russian Helicopters — part of the state corporation Rostec — received more powerful power units, modernized avionics and a new-generation autopilot system. The upgrades enhance mission safety and efficiency, especially in harsh-climate environments.

The new capability to immediately heat the cabin and equipment without starting the engines also represents an important improvement for Arctic operations, where extreme cold is a constant challenge for crews and equipment.
